How many sessions, and how much?
Laser tattoo removal is paid per session or by package, and most tattoos need several sessions spaced weeks apart. The Kirby-Desai scale estimates the number of sessions from six factors (skin type, location, colors, amount of ink, scarring and layering) (Kirby-Desai scale (2009)). For price, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports an average of $697 for laser skin treatments like tattoo removal, excluding other fees (American Society of Plastic Surgeons); clinic prices vary widely by tattoo size and city.

Laser types you will hear about
Clinics name their devices. What matters is that the laser has the right wavelength for your ink colors and that an experienced professional sets it for your skin.
| Technology | What it is used for | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Picosecond lasers (e.g. PicoSure, PicoWay, enlighten, PiQo4) | Pulses in trillionths of a second; often used for stubborn ink and some colors | Ask which wavelengths the clinic's device has for your colors |
| Q-switched Nd:YAG (1064 / 532 nm) | Long-standing workhorse for black and dark ink; 1064 nm is commonly used on darker skin | Ask about settings for your skin type |
| Q-switched ruby / alexandrite (694 / 755 nm) | Red-light wavelengths that target green and blue ink | Not every clinic has them |
| Saline / non-laser lightening | Mostly for small cosmetic tattoos (brows); works regardless of ink color | Several sessions; scarring risk if done poorly |

- Check who performs the treatment: results depend almost entirely on the person using the laser, as the American Academy of Dermatology points out.
- Estimate sessions with the calculator and compare price per session with packages.
- Book a consultation and ask for before-and-after photos of tattoos like yours, a test spot and written aftercare.

About SkinClean
SkinClean is an independent directory, not a clinic and not an official source. Each listing comes from Google Maps (August 2025) and, when the clinic has its own website, from what its home page says. We show where each fact comes from, we do not publish invented reviews or "verified" badges, and clinics do not pay to appear. How we build the directory · Disclaimer.

Laser tattoo removal: common questions
How can I get a tattoo removed?
Laser treatment by a trained professional is the standard method: the laser breaks ink into tiny particles that your body clears over the following weeks. The FDA notes that lasers are cleared for use by or under the supervision of a health care professional (FDA).
Will insurance cover tattoo removal?
Usually not: insurers treat it as a cosmetic procedure. Ask your insurer if the removal is needed for a medical reason, such as an allergic reaction to the ink.
Where can I get a tattoo removed?
At dedicated tattoo removal studios, dermatology and plastic surgery practices, and med spas with a removal laser. Use the search above or browse by state; each listing says whether the clinic's name or website mentions tattoo removal.
How many sessions does laser tattoo removal take?
It depends on your skin type, the tattoo's location, colors, amount of ink, scarring and layering. The Kirby-Desai scale adds those six factors to estimate the number of sessions (Kirby-Desai scale (2009)); try it in the calculator.
How long between sessions?
The Kirby-Desai scale assumes 6 to 8 weeks between treatments (Kirby-Desai scale (2009)); many clinics wait longer, especially for darker skin.
How much does laser tattoo removal cost?
Clinics price per session or by package. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons gives an average of $697 for laser skin treatments like tattoo removal, without anesthesia or other fees (American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Multiply your clinic's price by the expected sessions in the calculator.
Do tattoo removal creams work?
No. The FDA has not approved any tattoo removal cream or do-it-yourself kit and warns they can cause rashes, burns and scars (FDA).
Can every tattoo be removed completely?
Many tattoos fade completely or almost completely, but results vary with ink colors, density and the person performing the treatment (American Academy of Dermatology). Ask the clinic for before-and-after photos of similar tattoos.
Is laser tattoo removal safe for dark skin?
Yes, with the right laser and settings (often 1064 nm) and an experienced provider; darker skin has a higher risk of pigment changes. Read skin type and laser safety.
Does SkinClean recommend or rank clinics?
No. SkinClean is an independent, unofficial directory. We do not rank clinics, take payments for placement or verify licenses. Each listing shows where its data come from. Read how we build the directory.
